I have nothing against puffs (actually the cinnamo I have nothing against puffs (actually the cinnamon apple are somewhat tasty) or yogurt bites but do not mistake a super expensive (based on calories/ounce) convenience food snack with a developmental milestone.

Parents often ask me if they can "start puffs" as they move on from purees and I instead encourage them to save their $$ and just cut the soft food they are eating (fruits, veg, meat, cheese, egg, etc) into small bites for their child to try.

Puffs, cheerios, yogurt bites are expensive & hypermarketed manufactured bits that have nothing to do with developmental readiness nor do they support food readiness or development....most end up in the carpet or wedged in the carseat anyway!

(Also no judgment if you do use them...the purpose of the post is to free you from the thought & financial obligation that they are in some way required to promote eating or development)

You (hopefully) wouldn't tell your upset spouse/co You (hopefully) wouldn't tell your upset spouse/coworker/friend/parent/sibling "You're fine!" when they tell you (with words, actions, or omissions) they are struggling.

If you wouldn't say, "You're fine!" to an adult don't say it to your child.

Instead try, "Wow it looks like you're upset" or "I can tell something is bothering you" or "Oh my...you seem to be really having a tough time" or "I see you are having a tough moment"

You don't have to solve your child's problems or fix their mood...just make them feel understood in where they are at the moment and their problems/moods mostly solve themselves.

(p.s. works for spouse/coworker/friend/parent/sibling too)
